Joe Russo (1971) is an American director, producer, screenwriter and actor.
With his brother Anthony Russo they direct most of their work together.
Joe Russo, along with his brother and co-director Anthony, first made their name directing cult TV shows and the occasional low-budget indie comedy. After working on shows like “Community” (NBC 2009-15) and “Arrested Development” (FOX 2003-2005, Netflix 2013-), Russo and his brother approached Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige to direct the “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (2014) even though he has never directed an action film before. Feige had faith in the two brothers, and the faith paid off in a blockbuster box office hit that also garnered significant critical acclaim.
They are best known for directing four films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU): Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). ). Endgame grossed over $2.798 billion worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Due to their successes in the MCU, the Russo brothers are the second most commercially successful directors of all time, behind only Steven Spielberg.
